Frequently Asked Questions about TechSmith Certification Courses

General Questions

What's the value of the TechSmith Certification course?

It's hard to put a price tag on learning and improving skills. However, for the amount of content and the fact that these are the only official certifications for TechSmith Camtasia and Snagit makes the value pretty high. Other online training courses online will run you between $50 and $1,000 or more.

Can I return the course for a refund? Or can I buy the course without purchasing maintenance for Camtasia or Snagit?

The course is part of your maintenance package. A return of your maintenance would fall under our standard 30-day return policy. And at this time TechSmith Certification courses are NOT available for purchase separate from Snagit or Camtasia Maintenance. If you're interested in purchasing maintenance to gain access to the course, please contact us.

What does it mean to be certified in Camtasia or Snagit? How does it help me?

Certification means that you are a confident user of the product and understand how to use it effectively and efficiently. Through the certification processes, you will gain skills and knowledge that will help you to create screencasts and videos (Camtasia) or images, videos and other pieces that communicate concepts, ideas and information visually (Snagit). Like any learning process though, becoming certified can be a great help, but mastering the process also requires practice and working to improve. The certification will lay a solid foundation for you to build your skills and knowledge, and help expose you to many of the options and features available within Camtasia or Snagit. After completion of your certification, your employers or prospective employers can rest assured that you have worked through the process of gaining a significant amount of knowledge about Camtasia or Snagit and how to use it.

How does the content in the Camtasia or Snagit Certification compare to the free tutorials?

The free tutorials are fantastic and can be utilized along with the certification to grow your knowledge of Camtasia or Snagit. While there is some overlap in topics, the Certifications take a very different approach to the learning process. The certification not only goes into more depth about the various tools (some not covered by the free tutorials), they also follow the author through the creation of a project (Camtasia) or through actual, use-case-specific workflows (Snagit). This methodology not only allows you to learn the tools and how to use them but will enable you to see the outcomes throughout the process.

How do I earn each certification? And what do I get with it?

You will earn Camtasia or Snagit certification after you view all of the videos and take all of the quizzes in a course, passing each quiz with a minimum of 80% correct.

For Camtasia Certification: Once you have completed all of the lessons, you will need to click on the Receive My Certification course which will complete the certification process. Please note that if you have not completed each lesson, you will not be able to access the Receive My Certification course.

For Snagit Certification: You will receive an email with your certificate. Make sure to check your Junk or Spam folder if you do not see it. Alternatively, return to the Course Overview page. If you have completed all the necessary requirements for certification, there will be a link that says "View certificate." Click this to view and print your certificate.

Because of the length of the course, we offer a second way to complete Camtasia Certification. Users with a deep knowledge of Camtasia can take the Camtasia Certification (Test Only) course (available in the Camtasia Certification Course), which will take you through a series of quizzes. On completion and passing all of the quizzes with a minimum of 80%, your certification will be issued. Please note that you must complete either the Camtasia Certification course or the Test Only option in its entirety. You cannot complete part of one and part of the other and receive your certification.

How long will it take me to complete each certification?

There is over 15 hours of video content and many quizzes. Also, there are other resources, like downloadable project files. While you could complete all of the material within 16 to 17 hours, it's highly recommended that you also spend time practicing and using Camtasia.

The Snagit Certification contains 23 video lessons, equaling about 1 hour and 40 minutes of learning content. There are also 5 knowledge check points throughout the courses, containing 10 questions each. Earning the certification requires that you complete all video lessons, plus pass each knowledge check with a score of 80% or greater. Generally, this amounts to approximately 2 hours of time to complete the video lessons and the knowledge check questions in order to earn your certificate. However, it is recommended that you practice using Snagit as you go through the course, which adds some time.

How does Camtasia Certification compare to other Camtasia courses (e.g. Lynda.com, etc...)?

Other courses about Camtasia are great and can do a great job providing anyone who takes them with knowledge about the software. As the creators of Camtasia, TechSmith is the only one able to issue an official certification for the software. Because we realize there are many people who have used Camtasia for many years and are very confident in their knowledge of the software, we have provided a Test Only option. In this option, you can go through just the exam to earn your certification. While we'd recommend and encourage you to look at the learning materials, this alternative path allows those who have invested time into their learning previous to the launch of the certification to show off their knowledge without repeating the learning process.

How to Access the Course or Certificate

I use Camtasia and/or Snagit at my work, but I don't know if my company purchased maintenance, so I can access the certification. How can I get access?

You will need to speak with your software asset manager or IT department to see if they purchased maintenance and if they did to forward you the TechSmith Certification Access email. To help you communicate with your software asset manager or IT team, you can use this text to ask about maintenance and access the Camtasia Certification: "Want to check to see if we purchased a maintenance agreement for Camtasia/Snagit. If so, do you have the TechSmith Certification Access email that will allow me to access the Certification training course?"

If maintenance was not purchased with Camtasia or Snagit you will need to have maintenance before you will be able to access the certification course(s). If it is unknown whether maintenance was purchased, you will need to contact our customer service team.

Why doesn't progress in the course content count towards the Camtasia Certification Test Only or progress in the Camtasia Certification test count towards the course content?

The progress is tracked separately to keep the experience simple and straightforward. Remember, even if you want to take the test, you can still review the materials without the commitment of completing the certification in the course.

I have taken and passed all of the quizzes, why does it say that I have not completed the course?

It could be that one of the lessons did not get marked complete. When you have completed a course, you should see a banner across the course tile in the course catalog that says Complete. If not all of the lessons have been completed it will say In-Progress.

What's the process for posting my certification on LinkedIn?

Once you have completed either all of the required courses and their associated quizzes or the Certification Test Only option, you will be sent an email confirming that you have completed the Certification. From that email, you will be given options for accessing and downloading your certificate and an option to add your Certification to LinkedIn.

After you click on the LinkedIn button, you may be prompted to log in to your TechSmith account again. After which, you will be asked to open LinkedIn in a new tab to the Add certification option. In this new tab, use the information provided to fill out the form for LinkedIn.

Alternatively, you can access the option to add your Certification to LinkedIn by going to My Profile. In the My Profile section, you can see completed and in-progress courses. If you have completed the Certification you will see an Add to profile LinkedIn button.

How long do I get access to TechSmith Certification training materials?

You will be able to access the TechSmith Certification course(s) as long as you are current with Camtasia or Snagit Maintenance.

Questions Related to Course Content

Does the content contain training for Mac users of Camtasia and Snagit?

Camtasia is very similar on both platforms. In instances where there were minor differences, efforts were made to call out those differences. In situations where there were dramatic differences, specific lessons were created. It's worth noting that questions about both platforms will be asked in the testing. Even if you are not a Mac user, part of the certification is understanding the differences between platforms, and currently a requirement for completion.

Snagit is very similar across platforms. In instances where there were differences that affect workflow or potential understanding of feature use, efforts were made to call out those differences. There are no Mac specific lessons or quiz questions.

Why wasn't X, Y, or Z covered in this course?

As much as we'd like to cover every nuance of the product, every aspect of creating screencasts, and every way you can communicate visually, we decided to focus on pieces that were most essential. If you feel we have missed something that should be covered in the certification process, please let us know by providing feedback in the survey for the course that corresponds to your feedback.
